Track 1 · 4-Stroke Dual-Fuel (DF) & Spark-Gas (SG) Engine Mastery

Lean-Burn Otto Cycle Physics, Lambda Window & Methane Number (MN)

HD Video Lecture + 6 Deep Sections + 5-Question Exam Free Sample Module

How 4-stroke medium-speed Dual-Fuel (DF) and Spark-Ignited Gas (SG) engines achieve high thermal efficiency (47–50%) and IMO Tier III NOx compliance by operating in the ultra-lean Otto cycle window (Lambda 2.05–2.20).

Module 01 Lecture: Otto vs. Diesel Cycle, Lambda (2.05–2.20) & Methane Number
HD Studio Lecture + Captions

Key Engineering Objectives

  • Distinguish the premixed lean-burn Otto cycle (low-pressure gas admission during intake) from the diffusion Diesel cycle.
  • Calculate and control excess air ratio (Lambda λ) using Charge Air Receiver Pressure, Exhaust Wastegate (EWG), and Compressor Bypass (CBP).
  • Evaluate fuel gas Methane Number (MN 65–100) impact on auto-ignition knock margin when burning LNG Boil-Off Gas (BOG) versus pipeline gas.
  • Diagnose rich-limit end-gas detonation vs. lean-limit flame quenching (misfire) across load transients and ambient temperature changes.

Technical Lesson Notes (6 Engineering Sections)

SECTION 01

1. Premixed Otto Cycle vs. Diffusion Diesel Cycle: In a 4-stroke medium-speed Dual-Fuel (DF) or Spark-Ignited Gas (SG) engine operating in gas mode, low-pressure natural gas (4.0–6.0 bar(g)) is admitted into the cylinder intake runner during the intake stroke and premixed homogeneously with charge air before compression. Unlike the diffusion Diesel cycle (where fuel is injected at >1,200 bar near TDC and burns along a stoichiometric diffusion flame front at >2,200 K), the premixed lean-burn Otto cycle compresses a uniform, ultra-lean air-gas charge across the entire cylinder volume.

SECTION 02

2. Ultra-Lean Excess Air Ratio (Lambda λ = 2.05–2.20): Because approximately twice the stoichiometric mass of air is trapped inside the cylinder, the excess air absorbs combustion heat and keeps peak flame temperature below the Zeldovich thermal NOx formation threshold (~1,800 K). This allows 4-stroke DF and SG engines in gas mode to achieve ~85% NOx reduction and direct IMO Tier III / onshore EPA/TA-Luft compliance without selective catalytic reduction (SCR) urea dosing, while simultaneously eliminating SOx and particulate soot.

SECTION 03

3. The Narrow Thermodynamic Corridor (Knock vs. Misfire Boundaries): Operating at Lambda 2.05–2.20 places every cylinder between two unforgiving physical boundaries. If the air-fuel ratio drifts too rich (Lambda < 1.98) or charge-air temperature rises excessively, unburned end-gas in the periphery of the combustion chamber reaches auto-ignition temperature ahead of the propagating flame front, causing high-frequency acoustic pressure waves (detonation / knocking). Conversely, if the mixture drifts too lean (Lambda > 2.25), the flame front quenches before completing combustion (misfire), dropping cylinder EGT and sending unburned methane into the hot exhaust manifold.

SECTION 04

4. Active Air-Fuel Ratio Control via Exhaust Wastegate (EWG) & Compressor Bypass (CBP): Because a 4-stroke medium-speed gas engine has no intake throttle valve on the air receiver, the Main Control Module (MCM) controls Lambda by regulating turbocharger boost pressure. The Exhaust Wastegate (EWG) bypasses exhaust gas around the turbine at medium-to-high load to prevent over-boosting (which would lean out the cylinder to misfire), while the fast-acting Compressor Bypass (CBP) recirculates or vents compressed air from the receiver back to the turbocharger intake to prevent compressor surge during sudden load rejections and rapidly enrich Lambda during load steps.

SECTION 05

5. Fuel Gas Methane Number (MN) & LNG Weathering: Methane Number (MN) scales a fuel gas’s resistance to auto-ignition knock from MN 100 (pure methane, CH₄) down to MN 0 (pure hydrogen). While pure methane has a high auto-ignition temperature (~595°C), heavier alkanes present in LNG and pipeline gas—specifically ethane (C₂H₆, MN ~44), propane (C₃H₈, MN ~34), and butane (C₄H₁₀, MN ~10)—auto-ignite at much lower temperatures. As LNG sits in a bunker or cargo tank ("weathering"), lighter methane boils off first at -161.5°C, progressively enriching the remaining liquid heel in ethane and propane and dropping the fuel Methane Number from MN 88–92 down toward MN 68–72.

SECTION 06

6. LT Charge-Air Cooler Compensation & MCM Derating Curves: Every 1°C rise in charge-air receiver temperature above the 42–45°C design reference reduces effective knock margin by roughly 0.5–0.8 MN points. When operating on lower-MN weathered LNG or in tropical seawater, the automation lowers the Low-Temperature (LT) two-stage charge-air cooler setpoint (while staying above humidity condensation dewpoint to prevent water droplet ingestion) and retards ignition/micropilot timing by 1.5°–3.0° crank angle.

Operating Parameter & Tolerance Reference Table

Parameter / System Nominal Operating Window Alarm / Fast Gas Trip Limit
Excess Air Ratio (Lambda λ) in Gas Mode2.05 – 2.20 λ< 1.98 λ (Knock Risk) / > 2.25 λ (Misfire Risk)
Brake Thermal Efficiency (Gas Mode)47.5% – 50.2%Minimum 45.0% at 85% MCR
Design Fuel Methane Number (MN)MN 80 – MN 100Derate / Retard < MN 70; Min MN 65
Charge-Air Receiver Temp (After Cooler)40°C – 45°CHigh Alarm 52°C / Auto Gas Trip 58°C
Exhaust Wastegate (EWG) Control Range0% – 100% ModulatingDeviation Alarm > ±8% from Command
Compressor Bypass (CBP) Response Time< 1.2 seconds full strokeAnti-Surge Open on >15% Load Drop

Field Troubleshooting & Inspection Checklist

  • Before gas transfer, verify Fuel Gas Methane Number (MN) calculation from GC / bunker delivery note (target MN >= 75 for 100% MCR).
  • Confirm LT charge-air cooler 3-way valve holds receiver air temperature between 41°C and 45°C without condensate carry-over.
  • Stroke-test Exhaust Wastegate (EWG) and Compressor Bypass (CBP) pneumatic/electric actuators during pre-start inspection; sticking EWG stems are the #1 cause of high-load Lambda drift.
  • Monitor cylinder-to-cylinder EGT spread at 75–85% MCR (must remain within ±25°C of engine average).

Module 01 Technical Assessment (5 Server-Graded Questions)

1. Why do 4-stroke medium-speed Dual-Fuel (DF) and Spark-Gas (SG) engines operate at an excess air ratio (Lambda λ) of ~2.05–2.20 in gas mode?
2. What happens to the engine knock margin when aged LNG fuel ("weathered" LNG enriched in ethane and propane) lowers the Methane Number (MN) from 88 to 68?
3. If the Exhaust Wastegate (EWG) valve seizes in the fully CLOSED position while the engine ramps from 50% to 90% MCR in gas mode, what happens to the cylinder mixture?
4. What is the primary function of the Compressor Bypass (CBP) valve during a sudden 40% generator load rejection in gas mode?
5. How does the engine control system compensate when operating on low-Methane-Number gas (e.g., MN 68) or high ambient air temperatures?
